Call for ‘Peg Writers: PF’s 40th Anniversary

Hey Winnipeg! Where are you?

This summer, Prairie Fire is turning 40! To celebrate, we want to see work from Winnipeggers we haven’t published before.

We know there are fabulous and talented writers in the ‘Peg which have yet to grace our pages, and we’re looking to bring those writers to our readers!

Up to the challenge?

Here’s the details:

Submit by 11:59PM on April 20th.

We’ll be (once again) accepting online submissions for this issue due to the tight turn around time (the issue will be out in July!). Send your cover letter and submission to Janine at [email protected]

Fiction and Creative Non-Fiction: Max. word count 5000 words. Please send only one story at a time!

Poetry: Max of three (3) poems with a max line count of 150 lines (total).




Be sure to include the following:

***Please state in your cover letter that you are submitting to “PF’s 40th Anniversary Issue”***

  1. a two- or three-sentence biographical statement;
  2. your full mailing address, e-mail address (if you have one) and phone number;
  3. the title(s) of the piece(s) you are submitting;
  4. the genre of the piece(s) you are submitting (poetry, fiction, non-fiction).
    Let us know if you are just starting to send out your work.


Please Note

  • Prairie Firedoes not accept previously published work.
  • We ask that you let us know if your work is also submitted elsewhere, and, if it is accepted, to notify us right away.
  • Your submission should be typed (double-spaced) on one side of the page only. Poetry may be single-spaced.
  • Each page of poetry must contain your name and address at the top left.
  • For fiction and creative non-fiction, centre the title halfway down on the first page, with your name below it. Include a word count at the top right corner of the first page and your address at the top left corner. Make sure your pages are numbered.


  • E-mailed submissions WILL BE ACCEPTED FOR THIS ISSUE ONLY.
    • Attachments of .doc, .docx or PDF accepted. Please do not send links to Google Docs, Dropbox or other places on the internet.

  • Use 8.5 x 11–inch standard white bond paper.
  • Do not staple the pages together (paper clips are ok).
  • Include an e-mail address for notification, or a self-addressed envelope with sufficient postage for the return of the manuscript or for notification.
