Rates of Payment
Prairie Fire buys First North American Serial Rights Only. Rights are reassigned to the author upon publication. Payment is made following publication and includes one (1) free contributor's copy. The term "page" refers to published page. We reserve the right to pay for only 3/4 page if any page occupies 34 lines or less; for only 1/2 page if 23 lines or less; for 1/4 page if 12 lines or less. "Kill fee" for material accepted in writing but subsequently not used is $25-$50. We reserve the right to refuse payment for work which proves to have been previously published elsewhere, or which turns out to have been plagiarized. Commissioned writing and anything not covered by this rate sheet will be negotiated on an individual basis. These rates are subject to change without notice. (Electronic rates will be negotiated separately.)
Rates: Literary Art
1. Fiction: Short fiction and excerpts from longer works. $50 for first
page; $45 for each additional page. Maximum fee $500.
2. Essays, articles, editorials: $45 for first page; $40 for each additional
page. Maximum fee $250.
3. Poetry: Short poems, prose poems & long poems. $40 for first page;
$35 for each additional page. Maximum fee $225.
4. Interviews, Profiles: $35 for first page; $30 for each additional page.
Note: The fee for interviews is shared between the subject of the interview
and the interviewer, with the subject receiving 50% and the interviewer
receiving 100%. Maximum fee $100 (subject); $200 (interviewer).
5. Other: Plays, scripts, exchanges of correspondence, etc. $30 for first
page; $25 for each additional page. Maximum fee $175.
6. Book Reviews: Our Web site (Prairie Fire Review of Books) fee will
be the primary fee and will be calculated at 5¢ per word. Maximum fee:
$150. The print fee, should we also choose to use a review in Prairie
Fire, will be 25% of the Web site fee or $25, whichever is greater.
7. Permissions/Licensing: Negotiable.
Rates: Visual Art
1. Front Cover: $200 for reprint rights.
2. Back Cover: $100 for reprint rights.
3. Wrap-Around Cover: $300 for reprint rights.
4. Portfolios and single pages: $50 per page ($25 per 1/2 page) for reprint
rights; $100 per page ($50 per 1/2 page) for commissioned art.
5. Commissioned cover art and photo portraits: Negotiable.
